Jason's New Big White Truck

My brother-in-law, Jason, recently traded in his Honda Accord for a white Ford F-150. It suits him much better because he's a pretty big guy and needed a pretty big car to match. Well, Anna LOVES Uncle Jason's big white truck. And Jason kind of likes the fact that Anna loves it so much.;) Here are some pics he got on his phone...

Anna's First Teeth Cleaning

Anna went to the dentist a few weeks ago for her scheduled check-up. This was her third trip to the dentist. They said that normally they don't try to do teeth-cleaning until after 3 years old because the kids usually get freaked out. Anna was doing so well with everything, though, that they went ahead and did her first cleaning. Doesn't she look like such a big girl!?

I was pretty jealous because instead of that icky fluoride mouthwash that we had to swish around until that dreaded timer went off when we went to the pediatric dentist as kids, they just "painted" this fluoride gel onto her teeth and told me not to brush her teeth for 24 hours. How much easier is that??! They also filled me in that studies have shown that the dreaded mouthwash was completely useless in protecting against cavities! I was pretty bummed that we had gone through that torture for nothing, but was relieved that she didn't have to endure it. She was pretty excited afterwards when she got a Dora and Diego sticker and a bouncy ball!

The Complete Truth

The majority of posts on this blog have to do with Anna. However it is, after all, Hege Highlights, so I would be remiss in leaving out the rest of the story. When we look back at this blog years from now, I want it to show the whole truth. Although I try to remain optimistic in most of my posts, I feel the need to address some pain we are going through right now. Will and I want so badly to add another child to our family. We want Anna to be a big sister. But I have now miscarried twice--once in August and again last month around Easter. That's two almost-babies, two could-have-beens, two what-ifs. We are trying so hard not to become jaded, to keep steadfast in our hopes that one day we will have another baby. But it's hard. It makes you doubt yourself. And it really messes up that perfect little plan you think you have for your life! I just keep praying that God will heal our hearts and that in His time, our wish for another baby will come true. Thanks to all of those precious people in our lives who have thought about us and prayed for us. I hope one day we can look back and realize the plan God had in all of this. Until then, we'll just continue to hope.

Teacher's Appreciation Week

I can't believe the school year is almost over! This week is Teacher Apprec- iation Week and I wanted to do something special for Anna's teachers. Although it's "just" a Mother's Morning Out class, Miss Linda and Miss Kelly have been wonderful. They have done so many cute things with the kids and have gone out of their way to make things fun and exciting. I know that Anna's first perceptions of "school" could shape her opinion of it for years to come. I love that Anna loves being there and quickly became so comfortable there that she barely looks back when I drop her off. That is so reassuring! I wanted to let her teachers know how much we appreciate all they have done this year. After talking with my mom about all the useless things that she has gotten as teacher's gifts, I decided flowers would be our best bet. What woman doesn't like getting flowers? So, before school this morning, Anna and I headed to the Harris Teeter to pick out flowers for Miss Linda and Miss Kelly. She picked out beautiful hot pink and yellow arrangements, perfect for summer. She was so proud of herself marching into that classroom carrying her flowers. I just had to get a picture!

My Little Gardener

Last week, I got a sweet card in the mail from my mom. The neat thing about it was that the outer shell of the card was actually paper implanted with wildflower seeds. I decided that Anna and I needed to find out if they would really grow. Nannie had given me a Carolina planter a while back that has been begging for something to be planted in it, so it seemed the perfect fit. We started out soaking the card in water...

My excited gardening assistant
Then we tore up the card and planted the pieces in the soil.
I think Anna had way more fun playing in the water.
And guess what!?...a week later we have sprouting!
I'll keep you posted on our progress! I can't wait for pretty wildflowers!

Tinkerbell Goes to the Baseball Game

Anna decided before the last Dash game that she wanted to wear her Tinkerbell costume from Halloween. So, we changed her into her "social butterfly" outfit to match and headed to the game. Some of those ballpark workers about had a fit over her...

During the game, Anna discovered how to use our small pocket camera and proceeded to take A BUNCH of pictures. We came home with almost 200 on the camera and I easily wittled it down to 40 or so (lots of duplicates). Thank goodness for digital! Here are some samples of her work...

Our Trip to see the Cows

One of my friends from work, Tina, is the mother of twin three-year-old boys (Lord, bless her). She does a fabulous job of finding fun and creative things for them to do. Last week, she invited some friends to meet her and the boys at Homeland Creamery and Dairy Farm in Julian, NC. I was so excited! Anna and I picked up our friends Jennifer and Noah and made the hour trek to Julian. We learned so much about cows and milk!

She got to feed the baby calf her bottle!
Anna was not a fan of the big turkey.

After the hayride, we fed the baby calf and saw the different animals. It was really neat because dogs and cats and chickens and roosters were just running all over the place. The kids especially liked watching the rooster do his "cock-a-doodle-doo"! They also had a modified milking station set up so you could see what it would be like to milk a cow. Anna didn't want to try it once she realized it would get her hands wet, even though it was just water! Crazy girl!
After the tour of the "milking parlor", they brought out cups of their homemade ice cream--so creamy!

Anna with her friends Noah and Jace

This is the third generation that has kept the dairy farm going and they now provide dairy products to much of the piedmont NC region. Because everything is done on sight, their products can enter the stores within 24 hours of milking! Isn't that amazing? I'm going to have to look out for them while I'm grocery shopping!
We topped the trip off with a McDonald's Happy Meal for lunch. What a treat!
